I'm Back!!

Hello lovelies!!

I am exited to get back to this empty blog and really fill it in with reviews on the food I get to enjoy.  Even as a cancer patient, I still get to eat!  I have friends that treat me to special meals as well as my husband and our standing Friday lunch dates.  I love food, I love the fellowship and the experience I get when I am able to sit and enjoy a great meal.  There are SO many places I have visited since I have set up this blog.  I have a few entries I will make now since my visits to these establishments were recent, then we will fill in the blog as we go along discovering our favorite eating places in our area.  I may even review a restaurant more than once, based on my dining experience for that particular stay.  I WANT AND NEED your feedback.  This is fun and can be informative.

The qualities that I base my ratings on will be:

Restaurant vibe, cleanliness, staff knowledge and treatment, variety of foods, location and especially the TASTE!

Look for my posts to come flying in..and comment and submit reviews of your own!

Five Guys Burgers and Fries

Five Guys Burgers and Fries
1725 N. Town East Blvd., #210
Mesquite, Tx 75150
972-681-1039

So I finally got to visit Five Guys! I have heard many good things from my friends about this place, so for our Friday lunch date, this is where hubby and I parked.
When you walk in, it's a diner type atmosphere.  The smell of yummy burgers hit me as soon as I walked in.  The have a wall of potato sacks right by their entry, I suppose to reiterate what the sign says.. that their fries are made fresh from local potato growers...nice!  I love anyone who supports local agriculture families.
The young lady at the counter greeted us nicely and when she found out we had never been there before, she offered to run down the menu and how it works.  They have double and single meat burgers that come with tons of great options for toppers.  Their fries come in regular or cajun and a large order, at $3.09, is designed for sharing for two people.
Milton ordered the double bacon cheeseburger and I had the single and we jumped on an order of large cajun fries and shared a large drink.
I must note at this point, as Milton was getting our drink, I was taking in the scenery of watching the cooks work their magic and noticed the music playing..it was rock, the good old stuff, so I dig it!  The dining room was clean and the condiment area was well stocked.
It was a good thing we got there when we did!  It was lunch time and suddenly there was a crowd of patrons lining up for their turn.  Our food was ready fast, which is always a bonus.  All orders are given in a brown paper bag, so you can choose to stay in and eat or take off back to the office to make your co-workers jealous.

Upon taking the first bite, I realized, I'm in love.  The burger was fresh, hot, and juicy.  I ordered the standard toppings of lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, and mushrooms.  (Yes, those last two options come with the burger at no extra cost!)  My first thought was, "why have I waited so long to eat here?"  It really was that good.  Milton was equally as impressed with his burger, which looked huge! The two patties make a half pound burger.  The fries are amazing.  Fresh cut fries sprinkled with cajun seasoning is simple and completes the meal with a tasty kick.  By the way, I wasn't disappointed on the size of the fries.  Milton and I definitely got our fill sharing the large fry.

Overall, for under $20, this was one awesome lunch experience.   I will be coming back to try a Bacon Cheese Dog soon!

Don't forget to keep it local and Eat Mesquite!!

Jalepeno Tree

Jalapeno Tree
 1530 N Peachtree Rd
 Mesquite, TX 75149

Located in the AMC 30 block of restaurants, this Tex-Mex eatery appeared to have the smallest wait time, so my daughters and I pulled in to have a bite.
We walked in and found only a few people on the waiting list before us.  We were quoted "a few minutes" before being seated.  We waited for about 25 minutes and were finally sat at a table near the bar area.  The hostess that sat us was very nice and we were given chips, salsa, and a bowl of tequila lime sauce for dipping.  Our server came to our table pretty quickly, but she seemed like she was in a hurry and sort of frustrated.  She was not the most cheerful person and seemed a bit put out by my requests for chip and drink refills. I also asked her for tortillas and it was then that I stopped bothering her.  I was getting the "look" combined with deep sigh.
The menu has a great variety of interesting dishes and appetizers.  They also have an extensive list of specialty drinks from the bar.  There is a kids menu which includes their drink.  If you are looking to keep it on the light side, you are in the wrong place.  All of their food is rich and heavy with sauces, sour cream, or guacamole.
I ordered the Southwestern Tortilla Soup for an appetizer.  It was tasty, though unlike other tortilla soups, it was more of a cheesy based soup rather than tomato based.  We ordered the Del Rio Burrito, Gulf of Mexico Quesadilla, and an order of kids chicken tenders for our main course.  Our food was served timely and was hot and very delicious.
During our visit, we did a restroom inspection.  It wasn't the cleanest, but that's not the worst part.  Another server came into the restroom, came out of her stall, fiddled with her hair a bit, did NOT wash her hands and went right back onto the floor to her customers.  Likewise, our own server kept scratching on the back of her head during service to us and other guests.  I found this quite disturbing, especially when we asked for lemons.  She picked them up with her hands rather than a pair of tongs and served them to us on a small napkin.  I felt really grossed out! It only took these reasons for me to say I will likely NOT return to this restaurant.  I just didn't enjoy the vibe and for me, for that kind of money, I have to enjoy the full package.

Overall Mama Rating: 4

Welcome To A Food Adventure!

So, here's my new thing..because it's fun and something I KNOW I'm good at.  Y'all know I enjoy good food.  Milton and I "date" every Friday, whether it's dollar menu or casual dining all over Mesquite and some surrounding areas.  I am going to start posting my overall reviews on the places we visit.  You will find info on menu items, levels of service, cleanliness and most important the YUM factor!!  Each visit will get rated a "Mama Rating" on a scale of 1-10 for overall experience.  I would LOVE LOVE LOVE for any of my friends to send their opinions on what I write, and/or reviews of a place you have visited.  Who knows?  You may find a new favorite to frequent now and again OR know the ones to steer clear of.
Let's have fun with it...and Eat Mesquite!
